Growstown Near Zero
Tucked into the wooded Growstown neighborhood in Brunswick this project presented us with exciting challenges. We started by dismantling an earth-bermed, partial timber frame house down to the first floor deck, retaining only the daylight basement apartment. We rebuilt this 1980s home to a modern high performance standard guided by a beautiful New England Greek Revival design from Michael Maines. Even with the use of double hung windows we were able to achieve an air tightness more than twice that of the Passive House standard. Pairing 12 inch thick double walls with a roof full of solar panels, this cozy home is teetering on the edge of Net Zero Energy.
